SUMMARY:Behind the Lens: A Night of Women-Directed Short Films and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join the Women Employed Advocacy Council and Cinema/Chicago associate board as we close out Women’s History Month 2021 with an evening celebrating women in film to advance the missions of both organizations. Proceeds will benefit access to cinema for Chicagoans and CPS students\, as well as advancing opportunity and economic security for working women. \nAttendees will enjoy an evening of 4 short films—3 by Chicago filmmakers!—previously shown at the Chicago International Film Festival followed by a discussion with the all-female directors’ panel\, moderated by Ambar Mentor-Truppa\, Vice President of Communications at the Shriver Center on Poverty Law and Vice-Chair of Women Employed’s Board of Directors\, all while supporting the missions of these two incredible organizations. \nTune in and turn up for working women as we honor the women behind the scenes—both in film and in life—and cheers to impactful stories while sipping our signature event cocktail/mocktail\, as the event will kick off with a mixology demo by Argelia Martinez from Vida Mia Cocktails. We’ll email registrants with the DIY ingredients list! \nGet your tickets today! \nGet raffle tickets! \nLearn more about the films and directors being featured.

SUMMARY:Getting Less Than Minimum: Ending a Legacy of Slavery
DESCRIPTION:For most of us\, tipping after a meal is second nature. But what you may not know is that workers who earn tips are paid a subminimum wage\, which is direct legacy of slavery\, and a major factor in alarming rates of harassment and wage theft experienced by women—especially Black and Brown women—in service industries. And that’s no accident—it’s how the system was designed. Join us for a conversation on why we cannot advance racial justice\, gender equity\, and workplace safety without eliminating the subminimum tipped wage and enacting one full and fair wage. \nFEATURING: \nModerator: Laura Washington\, Chicago Sun-Times Columnist\nRick Bayless\, Chef and Restaurateur\nCherita Ellens\, President & CEO of Women Employed\nSaru Jayaraman\, President of One Fair Wage \nRegister today.

SUMMARY:Addressing Job Quality and Equity in a Time of Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Even before the pandemic and associated economic fallout\, one in four working adults in the US earned a wage insufficient to lift a small family out of poverty. The impact of this situation on families was immediately evident as we saw unprecedented food lines emerge overnight\, as we watched essential workers shoulder health risks to provide the goods and services we rely on\, and as we learned of the disproportionate toll borne by communities of color in this crisis. As we look to recover from our intersecting crises\, ensuring that more jobs are quality jobs will be essential to a sustainable recovery. \nOn Wednesday\, February 24\, from 1:00-2:15 p.m. CT\, we are joining the Economic Opportunities Program at the Aspen Institute for a conversation about how quietly courageous leaders in city government\, policy advocacy\, and workforce development are innovating to improve the quality of jobs in their communities. \nSpeakers will include Women Employed’s Executive Vice President of Policy and Organizational Impact\, Sharmili Majmudar; Grace Heffernan\, Sr. Project Manager\, Thomas P. Miller and Associates (Formerly Towards Employment); and Mariko Lockhart\, Director\, Seattle Office for Civil Rights. \nRegister today!
