Tell the Senate Judiciary Committee to Vote NO on Harmeet Dhillon

She Will Not Protect Our Civil Rights

The U.S. Senate’s Judiciary Committee is preparing to vote on the nomination of Harmeet Dhillon for Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. Since the U.S. Department of Justice’s establishment more than 150 years ago, it has served as the United States’ primary agency for upholding our federal civil rights laws.

Due to Dhillon’s problematic history of undermining the civil rights of vulnerable individuals and communities, she is unfit to lead the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division. Contact the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee today and demand that they reject her nomination. You don’t need to be a constituent to call.

Vote No on Harmeet Dhillon

In addition to Dhillon’s troubling record of anti-civil rights litigation, she has:

  • Backed President Trump’s claims of voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election, challenged the Voting Rights Act, and supported actions that would deprive U.S. citizens of their right to vote,
  • Displayed clear disregard for anyone who chooses to exercise their right to reproductive health care, which is a key component of economic freedom for so many,
  • Denied intersex, transgender, and nonbinary individuals their rights and attempted to diminish their existence.
  • Threatened the civil rights of women, People of Color, LGBTQ+ folks, and other communities who are protected by the Civil Rights Division,
  • In her career as a lawyer, she has represented clients who have created hostile and discriminatory workplaces.

Our next Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights should be someone with a demonstrated record of protecting our civil rights, who will enforce civil rights laws, and act with integrity. Harmeet Dhillon has proven that she does not meet this standard. She will not uphold the Department’s independence from Trump’s executive branch. She will abandon those who have tirelessly fought for the passage of civil rights legislation, and those who are protected by those laws. We deserve better.

TAKE ACTION

You don’t have to be a constituent to call. Here’s a sample script to use when making your calls:

  • Hi, my name is [YOUR NAME] and I am calling to urge you to vote NO on Harmeet Dhillon to lead the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division. She has proven she will not protect our civil rights.
  • She has challenged the Voting Rights Act and supported actions that would deprive citizens of their right to vote.
  • She has displayed clear disregard for our reproductive rights, which are key to the economic security of women and families.
  • She has assaulted the civil rights of transgender and non-binary individuals.
  • As a lawyer, she has represented clients who have created hostile and discriminatory working conditions.
  • The Civil Rights Division is supposed to enforce and protect our civil rights, but Dhillon’s track record shows she will undermine them at every opportunity.
  • Harmeet Dhillon is not the leader we need as head of the Civil Rights Division! Please vote no!

Things to Note

  • You can call officials at either their DC office or their district/local office. They will receive messages in both places.
  • You might end up speaking to the legislator’s staffer or intern. That’s okay! You can use the same call script with them, and they will deliver the message to your senator.
  • You might get a voicemail. That’s also okay! Again, you can use the same call script, and just leave it as a voicemail.
  • You can call after business hours! You may not speak to a live person, but you can still leave a voicemail and your message will get through.
  • Not getting through? Don’t give up! We know they are getting lots of calls. Keep calling, and try their other office, too!
