URGENT: Take Action TODAY to Prevent Cuts to Medicaid and SNAP

Protect Children, Seniors, People with Disabilities, and Low-Income Families

UPDATE: House Narrowly Passes Budget Resolution

The House of Representatives narrowly passed the GOP budget resolution on the evening of February 26th, including tens of billions of dollars in cuts to programs that working families depend upon. As we work to determine next steps, we will keep you informed.

The House is expected to vote on budget proposals TODAY, February 26th, that include hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to Medicaid and SNAP benefits, threatening the economic security of women and families. We need you to take action now. Call your U.S. Representative and tell them to vote NO on these cuts.

Tell your rep to vote NO on Cuts to SNAP and Medicaid

Both Medicaid and SNAP provide essential resources that ensure vital health services for our most vulnerable populations and combat food insecurity. In Illinois alone, where Women Employed is based, over one million families receive SNAP benefits, and 3.4 million residents get their health coverage through Medicaid. Any reduction in their funding will have disastrous outcomes. Those numbers increase exponentially when you look at the entire country.

Why these services matter:

  • Medicaid supports children, seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income families to access the care they need. Proposals to cut Medicaid would mean cuts to care, and tens of millions of people nationwide—more than 700,000 in Illinois alone—would lose health coverage.
  • SNAP improves overall health outcomes, reduces health care costs, and supports the well-being of children, older adults, and individuals with disabilities. Early access to SNAP improves educational and economic outcomes, breaking the cycle of poverty.
  • Cuts to SNAP and Medicaid harm state and local economies, grocery retailers, and hospitals, particularly in rural and low-income areas.

Help ensure that these essential resources remain protected. We need you to urge Congress to prevent Medicaid and SNAP cuts from happening. Together, we can make a real difference in safeguarding these vital lifelines for those who rely on it most.

TAKE ACTION

Here’s a sample script to use when making your call:

  • Hi, my name is [YOUR NAME], I’m from [CITY, STATE], and as your constituent, I am urging you to vote against the massive cuts to Medicaid and SNAP included in the GOP Budget Proposal.
  • Medicaid and SNAP provide essential resources that ensure vital health services for our most vulnerable populations and combat food insecurity.
  • The budget proposal would cut more than $880 billion from Medicaid, and $230 billion from SNAP. These cuts will harm millions upon millions of children, seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income families across the country.
  • [IF YOU LIVE IN ILLINOIS] In Illinois alone, more than 1 million families depend on SNAP, and more than 3.4 million get their health coverage through Medicaid.
  • These cuts will put the economic security, and the very lives, of tens of millions of people at risk. Please vote no!

Things to Note

  • You can call your officials at either their DC office or their district/local office. They will receive messages in both places.
  • You might end up speaking to your legislator’s staffer or intern. That’s okay! You can use the same call script with them, and they will deliver the message to your senator.
  • You might get a voicemail. That’s also okay! Again, you can use the same call script, and just leave it as a voicemail.
  • You can call after business hours! You may not speak to a live person, but you can still leave a voicemail and your message will get through.
  • Not getting through? Don’t give up! We know they are getting lots of calls. Keep calling, and try their other office, too!
