Tell Congress to Vote NO on the SAVE Act

Take Action to Protect Your Voting Rights

UPDATE: The SAVE Act has passed the House, but we can still block it in the Senate! Please continue to take action.

The Senate is expected to vote soon on unnecessary and damaging legislation, which has already passed the House, that will impact your right to vote. The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act requires all Americans to prove their citizenship status by presenting documentation—in person, in the form of a birth certificate or passport—when registering to vote and when updating their voter registration information. However, there’s already a citizenship affirmation on voter registration forms and cases of non-citizen voting are vanishingly rare. And if passed, it will silence many Americans. Take 2 minutes to protect our democratic values and demand the Senate vote NO on the SAVE Act.

Tell Congress to Oppose the SAVE Act.

This Act threatens to suppress the voices of the vast majority of American voters. Here’s why:

  • 146 million Americans do not own a passport.
  • 69 million married women do not own a birth certificate reflecting their new legal last name.
  • 60 million people who live in rural areas would be forced to drive up to eight hours round trip just to update their voter registration information.
  • Millions of transgender Americans are not in possession of documents reflecting the name they currently use.
  • And that’s not all!

The SAVE Act would prevent Americans from registering to vote by mail; end nationwide voter registration drives; and eliminate online voter registration—a service 42 states rely on. We need you to help ensure that our voting rights are protected. Reach out to Congress TODAY and urge them to oppose the SAVE Act!

TAKE ACTION

Here’s a sample script to use when making your calls:

  • Hi, my name is [YOUR NAME] and I live in [CITY, STATE]. I am calling to urge you to vote NO on the SAVE Act.
  • It threatens to suppress the voices of the vast majority of American voters, including:
    • 146 million Americans who don’t own a passport
    • 69 million married women whose birth certificate doesn’t reflect their new last name.
    • 60 million people in rural areas who would have to drive hours to update their voter registration.
    • Millions of transgender Americans who don’t possess documents reflecting their current name.
  • The SAVE Act would also prevent Americans from registering to vote by mail, and would end voter registration drives and online voter registration.
  • We cannot allow this to happen. Please vote NO on the SAVE Act.

Things to Note

  • You can call officials at either their DC office or their district/local office. They will receive messages in both places.
  • You might end up speaking to the legislator’s staffer or intern. That’s okay! You can use the same call script with them, and they will deliver the message to your senator.
  • You might get a voicemail. That’s also okay! Again, you can use the same call script, and just leave it as a voicemail.
  • You can call after business hours! You may not speak to a live person, but you can still leave a voicemail and your message will get through.
  • Not getting through? Don’t give up! We know they are getting lots of calls. Keep calling, and try their other office, too!
