Everyone Should Be Given Time To Care for Themselves and Their Families

On July 1, 2017 more than 450,000 Chicagoland workers gained the right to earn paid sick time! Visit sicktime.org to learn more about the paid sick time law in Chicago and Cook County, including how to calculate the time off you've earned and the best way to talk to your employer about your rights.

As head of the Earned Sick Time coalition, Women Employed played a leadership role in getting the paid sick time ordinances passed in 2016.

Despite the major victory for Chicagoland workers, in most other places across the country employees do not yet have this right. Of low-wage workers, a shocking 80 percent do not have paid sick days. Every worker should be able to stay home and take care of themselves or their family members when they get sick, without losing a day's pay or having to risk being fired.

WE is spearheading the Illinois Paid Leave Coalition, a group of over 70 organizations fighting for earned sick time for all Illinois workers. The Illinois Paid Leave Coalition is a member of Family Values@Work, a multi-state consortium of 21 state and local coalitions helping spur the growing movement for family-friendly workplace policies.
